NFL.com How does Myles Garrett fit in Rams defense? How All-Pro changes everything (no replies)

How does Myles Garrett fit in Rams defense? How All-Pro changes everything

Matt Okada June 6, 2026

Unlike the A.J. Brown trade -- which we had anticipated for months before the news broke on Monday -- the deal that sent that sent reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns to the Los Angeles Rams (which also happened Monday) was a complete shocker. Garrett had recently signed a four-year, $160 million extension with Cleveland that included a no-trade clause. Ultimately, he waived that clause to make the move across country to Los Angeles.

You can get an insightful breakdown of the winners and losers of this trade, including Jared Verse's potential impact in Cleveland. Now, let's explore the analytical breakdown on how Garrett fits into the Browns' defense and what you can expect from him statistically in 2026. Coming off a record-setting 23-sack campaign, it's going to be tough to improve, but can Garrett remain just as dominant with his new team? Should we expect to see regression in the five-time All-Pro's production?

Fit on the defensive line

On the surface, it might seem like Garrett will simply fill the hole left by Verse in his departure to Cleveland. There are aspects of that assumption that could be true: Garrett primarily aligned as a right edge rusher in 2025 (82.9% of snaps), and Verse did the same on the majority of his snaps (66.5%). However, from that right side, Garrett almost exclusively aligned as a 9-technique (81% of snaps) -- meaning he was positioned extremely wide, outside the opposing tight end. While Verse did align as a 9-technique on 65% of his right-side snaps, he slid into more interior positions far more frequently than Garrett, taking 10% of snaps as both a 7-technique (just inside the tight end) and a 5-technique (on the left tackle's outside shoulder).

In terms of technique, Rams outside linebacker Byron Young, who led the team with 12 sacks last season, would be the better comparison to Garrett. Young played 81% of his snaps as a 9-technique, yet he took just 20.7% of his snaps on the right edge, instead heavily favoring the left edge (71.3%). Ultimately, this presents defensive coordinator Chris Shula and the Rams staff with an interesting decision. They'll likely keep Garrett on the right, where he's strongest, but will they shift him inside more often, as they did with Verse? Do they adjust their scheme to keep both Garrett and Young at the 9-technique as often as possible? Will they do some combination of that or an alternative? We might learn a bit more in OTAs and the preseason. Either way, it should be fascinating to watch.

What Garrett brings to Rams

It's not hard to portray what Garrett does for a defense. He just recorded an NFL-record 23 sacks, won Defensive Player of the Year for a second time and earned his sixth straight Pro Bowl selection after an eighth consecutive season with double-digit sacks. Specifically over the last five years, no player in the league has more sacks (83), QB hits (156) or tackles for loss (107) than Garrett, and only Micah Parsons (418) has more quarterback pressures than Garrett's 401.

The face value numbers don't even tell the entire story. Consider Garrett's get-off -- the time it takes for a pass rusher to cross the line of scrimmage after the snap. His average get-off of 0.7 seconds last season was the fastest by any player with 200+ pass rushes. Moreover, that enabled Garrett to generate 31 quick QB pressures -- pressures within 2.5 seconds of the snap -- the fifth-most in the NFL, despite facing the most chip blocks in the league (139). To summarize, that means Garrett was consistently drawing extra attention from a route runner at the start of the play and was still getting to the quarterback as quickly -- and as often -- as anyone. Meanwhile, Rams edge rushers recorded an average get-off of 0.96 seconds last season, second-slowest in the league (ahead of only the Bears). Make no mistake, Garrett will be bringing the "rush" to the Los Angeles "pass rush" in 2026.

Oh, and just when you thought Garrett's game couldn't get any more impactful, he also recorded 17 run stuffs from edge alignment -- run tackles that resulted in a loss of yards or no gain -- last season, the second-most in the NFL behind only Maxx Crosby. And Garrett's 28 run stops from edge alignment -- run tackles that resulted in a "success" for the defense, per NGS -- were fourth-most, behind Crosby, T.J. Watt and Young. The 2025 Rams were the only team in the league to have multiple players (Young and Verse) with 50+ pressures and 25+ run stops from edge alignment, and it will remain that way heading into 2026 with Young and Garrett.

Ultimately, Garrett brings many of the same strengths to the Rams that Verse did, while adding aspects of the pass-rush game L.A. was lacking. He should make Shula's front even more well-rounded -- which is saying something -- while also elevating its ceiling for disruption and destruction.

Projecting Garrett's 2026 stats

With all this in mind, what kind of production can we expect from Garrett in 2026? Let's start with a realistic historical outlook: No player has recorded 20+ sacks in consecutive seasons, since the stat was first individually tracked in 1982. Only two of the 13 previous players to record a 20-sack season logged more than 15 sacks the ensuing year: Reggie White in 1988 (18) and J.J. Watt in 2015 (17.5). The average for those 13 previous players the following season is 12, with nine of them recording between 10 and 14 sacks. That said, none of the players in those instances changed teams the following year. You could argue that few -- if any -- were set up to play for a Super Bowl contender after upgrading a new defense, just as Garrett is with Los Angeles. Also, there's an intriguing possibility that Aaron Donald comes out of retirement for one last hurrah with the Rams. If that happens, this defensive line would be absurd.

Plus, there's an underrated aspect of this transition that plays in Garrett's favor. Last year, Rams' opponents dropped back to pass 661 times, seventh-most in the NFL. Defenses facing the Browns dropped back just 566 times, fourth-fewest for any defense. Applying Garrett's career pressure and sack rate numbers, that gap of 95 dropbacks would theoretically create an additional 16 pressures and three sacks. Garrett should see a relatively high number of pass rushes, likely close to 500, and should be able to maintain extremely high efficiency, given the level he's playing at and the excellence of the roster around him. With a pressure rate in the 17-18% range and a sack rate around 3.5% (both slightly above his career averages), that could translate to 80+ pressures and roughly 17 sacks. In logging 25+ QB hits and 25-30 run stops, Garrett would lock in another incredibly well-rounded season, similar to his 2023 DPOY campaign. That level of production again should put him in the conversation for Defensive Player of the Year and would position him alongside White and J.J. Watt for the best season following a 20-sack year we've ever seen.

They knew they had to get stronger on defense. So they did just that by trading for All-Pro corner Trent McDuffie, signing his Chiefs teammate Jaylen Watson, and landing premier defensive end Myles Garrett.

That slew of moves is no coincidence. As soon as the 2025 season ended, Rams brass held a meeting. The subject under discussion: how to upgrade an inexpensive defense with proven stars. The decision: attempt to transplant the cream of the AFC crop to the Los Angeles subdivision of the NFC West.

Stealing McDuffie away from Kansas City was surprisingly clever. The team parlayed a late first-round draft pick, plus other draft assets, into one of the NFL's top cornerbacks. While some still call it an overpay, they never mention that the move also helped lure in McDuffie's teammate, preserving their elite chemistry in the secondary.

Now the Rams have galvanized the entire roster and fanbase by adding the former face of the Cleveland Browns' franchise in Garrett, the best defender not just in the AFC but in the entire NFL.

Poona Ford gave Rams a template they immediately followed

It's not the first time general manager Les Snead has had success swiping top talent across conference lines. In fact, he did so quite recently by pilfering a stout Chargers run-stuffer named Poona Ford. Ford arrived to stiffen up LA's porous run defense, and that's what he did. Among 134 qualified interior defenders last season, Pro Football Focus ranked Ford fourth with an overall grade of 86.2.

His contributions altered the entire unit. In 2024, the Horns surrendered 130 rushing yards per game on 4.6 yards per carry. In 2025, Ford helped decrease those figures to 110.8 rushing yards per game and 4.3 yards per carry. And that despite facing an army of formidable running backs, including Christian McCaffrey, Derrick Henry, Saquon Barkley, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Kenneth Walker III.

After that success, why not wash, rinse, and repeat in 2026?

Los Angeles just poached the league's No. 1 pass rusher from AFC coffers. The Browns totaled 53 sacks last season, and Garrett recorded 23 of them.

In the same breath, the Rams pulled two of the AFC's most coveted corners from the stingy Kansas City Chiefs, whose defense allowed only 18 passing touchdowns and 195.6 passing yards per game.

If the new additions can replicate their performance in Los Angeles, the Rams' defense could outperform even that of the esteemed Seattle Seahawks.

Of course, there's more to it than simply adding up names and stats like it's fantasy football. The Blue and Yellow must assemble the new pieces to optimize everyone's contribution. Leave it to defensive coordinator Chris Shula to take his supercharged defense over the top, courtesy of the generous AFC.

As always, thanks for reading.

Tankathon 2027 Draft Power Ranking: LAR 32nd (2 replies)

Per Tankathon, who has us as 2026 SB winners this year :), and thereby picking 32nd in each Round next year, we have A TOTAL of 4 picks in 2027 NFL Draft:
LAR projected at #64, #132, #173 & #214 picks totaling 290.3 points.....or 32nd worst in NFL 2027 Drafting power. Ouch! :(

IE, 1st in 2027 Draft Power are NY Jets, 9 picks in 2027(including 3 First rounders)1464.3 pts
2nd is Cleveland (2 First Round picks) with 11 picks in 2027 totaling 1307.1 pts
and 3rd are the rebuilding, talent-depleted, $190 million DeadMoney burdened, Miami Dolphins (IE.my target) with their 2027 nine picks & 1118.9 points

Miami is banking on a GB Packer 3rd Round QB from QB-Factory Liberty to carry them to the 2027 NFC East Title. ME: Look up in the sky! Flying Pigs!! :)

Understandably, Tankathon have the Miami Dolphins picking first in every Round in the 2027 NFL Draft for their 2027 predications//prognostications.

My post here is to put forth ideas regarding purloining some 2027 Draft Picks from the new rookie Dolphin GM and HC, both from Green Bay Packer-ville by offering them veteran talent in spots we have it in abundance EG. WR, TE and Safety

When you check ESPN on the 2027 Dolphins Roster & Depth Chart, they stink talentwise everywhere, BUT ESPECIALLY at WR, TE, and Safety

AT TE, the 2027 Fins trot out JAG Greg Dulcich the 3rd Rd #80 overall 2022 Bronco Pick who has played in 26 games TOTAL in the past 4 season racking up a scintillating 799 yards on 67 receptions on 104 targets and a whopping 3 total TDs since '22. Oh yeah, for the '26 Fins and he scored ONE TD & lost a fumble.
IDEA: Wouldn't a proven vet TE like Davis Allen from nearby southern school Clemson, with his cheap $1.2 Million contract, 52% snaps on Ram 2025 Offense and 48% ST snaps be someone the Green Bay rubes might wanna look at?

.....and for those who say, Hey, Allen's contract is up next year, I say, so are most of Miami's roster holders too! Even our PS UDFA TE Mark Redman looks better than what the 2026 Fins TE Room has to offer.....I mean, the Miami TE Leader did not suit up for 42 of 68 games since 2022.......and this Dulcich guy is their TE stud at a salary of $1.698,000 for 2026! :)

Fin WR Room
-Miami's stud WR is 5 year-vet Tutu Atwell who is on a cheapie 1-Year $1,402,500 Dolphin Contract. The rest of the Fins WR staff make less $$ than Tutu.
Now the New Miami Braintrust wants to keep all their 2027 Draft Treasure, but they also might not to start their GM & HC careers with an 0-17 season, so maybe we could bait them with proven vets like Xavier Smith, Konata Mumpfield or Jordan Whittington? For a 6th or 7th Round Pick sent back to us for 2027.
We cannot keep them all in any case, why not try to get something for them, no?

The Dolphins 2026 Safety Room is also full of JAGs..........Veteran Lonnie Johnson Jr, is joining the Fins from Da Raidahs, and Miami is his 6th team since he was drafted by Houston in 2019.......Team Captain material Right There Sportsfans!!! ") Hello 6 Rounder for proven vet Tank McCollough, no?

Hey I like Tank......hell, I like all the aforementioned Ram players in this post.......but we need to scrounge up some 2027 Draft Picks, RIGHT??!!
And so my strategy would be to zero-in on the Rookie GM/HC Dolphin guys, who know they have a very poor 2026 roster.........AND NO MONEY TO SPEND........
AND offer them some cheap talent. Talent we are probably going to shed when the mega cut day comes in early September.

Anyways, the above is my strategy. If you guys have other ideas..........let's hear them.
It's idle NFL-talk-time now anyways till August PreSeason games no?

Cheers from sunny Vancouver, BC!! :)

Since we are now confirmed going "All In" this year...any good WR's out there worth adding? I think Diggs is still out there and he went over 1k last year, didn't he?

I would feel much better if we had better depth at WR due to Puka's physical style of play on the field...and off, as well as the age of Adams too.

I just haven't seen anything from Mumps or Whittingham. Some here were really high on them at first but after seeing them actually play, maybe they were just "high". lol

Don't even get me started on X Smith. Imo, he shouldn't even be on the team anymore.

The new kid Daniels comes with some good hype this year but then again, what rookie doesn't get overhyped at first???

Let's go get us a solid WR3 than could also play WR1 or WR2 for a stretch if needed. I would hate to see us stand pat at the position like we did last year with the CB's. We all know how that worked out, don't we?

Should we take a shot at signing Diggs???

<div id="div_4ba18b74984c3ce9fc9e957be6538027"

The media is FINALLY getting it about the Simpson/Garrett connection (15 replies)

It's a taken a few days for the big-mouth media football know-it-alls to finally get what the Rams did instead of trying to tell the world how dumb the Rams were for not taking a WR instead of Simpson. Now, they're going.... oh wow. The Rams really are playing 3D chess.

1) The Rams had to get their QB of the future this year or next.
2) If they waited until next, they would have had to use their 2027 first plus a bunch more to get into a position to take him, assuming it would be possible at all to move up that high.
3) They will never for many years be picking as high as 13.
4) So, they take Simpson with that "bonus" 1st rounder from Atlanta, thus freeing up their future 1st round picks.
5) That 2027 pick was crucial for getting Garrett (which they were in process of working out the kinks for the deal weeks before the draft).
6) So.... they get their QB of the future AND they get Garrett all at the same time, and the only future 1st rounder they gave up for Garrett was 2027's. And, it will likely be the 29th to 32nd pick. And, oh by the BTW, when Verse gets paid in a year or 2, he'll be more expensive than Garrett.
