So bittersweet living close to neighborhood I grew up in.

From time to time, just like a moment ago, I get sudden urges to just hop in the car and drive through there. We lived in an area where everyone knew EVERYONE. By the time I was 5 years old, I knew everybody on our block. At almost 45 years old, I can't tell you the name of the people across the street from me now. Back in the day, our house was across the street from my Grandfather...the house my Mom grew up in. As kids, my Brother and I and about TWELVE kids from within a block would play "chase" a.k.a Hide n seek on our ENTIRE block. We had a sandlot 200 yards from our house that had a diamond trail in the Summer from baseball and in the Winter, the center was shredded from football. Driving through there tonight, I was REALLY missing my Brother. I still can't believe he's gone. It's been over 30 years since we moved from that street and now there are only THREE houses with people I know. Everyone else has moved away. Too many have passed away, including SIX people who where within 5-6 years of my age.

It breaks my heart to see it rapidly turning to a run down ghetto but DAMN, the memories are so sweet when I go through there.

Makes me think...

Of my Grandfather's house. It was for sale about 2 years ago. I wanted so bad to buy it and get it looking the way it used to. Even if I could have, I'd be fixing up a house in what's now a crap hole of a neighborhood. It's sad but it also pisses me off too.

Yeah..

Everytime I drive by the neighborhood I grew up in, and see my old house, its bittersweet.. The memories are always great, but the fact that the area is deteriorating is heartbreaking..

We were driving last week and saw my first '76 TR7, that I sold about 10 years ago, sitting on the side of the road for sale.. it was in pretty sad shape, which just broke my heart because I had gotten it repainted and redone the interior a couple of years before I sold it.. This was the car I drove in my 'heyday' in the 80's, so it has always had a ton of sentimental value to me - and a TON of memories.. Unfortunately, I have to drive by it frequently, now.. I wished I had the money and space to buy it and restore it, but I don't..

I know the feeling...

Although I never lived in an apartment, except in College, it was similar for me... just further apart.

A few of the homes are now occupied by the kids of the original owners... so that's like 'home', but most are not.

Some of the homes are gone now. Not long ago, last summer, an old man I've known since birth was living in not an 'old' home, maybe 50 years old... he was in his early 80's. I didn't see him often. His home was only about 2 miles from me but in an area I seldom go through. At one time his 'lot' was the frontier border... nothing between him and the coast range mountains some 20 miles away.

Not long ago I was driving by... and NO home... nothing, none of the old equipment, no remnant, not a stick, scrapped level and ready for a crop. I had no idea it was going to be torn down, and at first didn't know what had happened to "Louie". I soon found out he had been put into a home.

So yeah, times change, and it seems to be changing at a more rapid pace these days. - JamesJM
