Music, I don't have all my oars in the water... (5 replies)

As you know I pretty much like every genre of music that exists... some a LOT more than others but I can't honestly say I 'do not like' any particular genre. I don't apologize for that... damn proud of it, in fact... HOWEVER...

There is one thing about my musical tastes that I have to admit borders on a psychological disorder. :) it makes NO FRIGGIN' SENSE... and the funny part about this is that you don't have to TELL me it makes no sense and I should seek help... I ALEADY KNOW THIS and agree.

Here it is: Everyone.. well, 99.99999999% of people anyway, listen to music while working out... be it lifting weights, running, swimming (waterproof cases), biking, all activities - everyone listens to music. BUT.. whereas everyone else in the world will ONLY listen to fast, hard, 'get pumped up' music while working out... I do not, necessarily that is.

I recently created 7 playlists for my iPhone to use on my Bike rides.. which take about an hour. So 1 hour of music for each day of the week. Lots of people do precisely the same... I have seen... and certainly HEARD, many of those lists. One thing about music is: most people are unabashed about sharing their music with the world whether you want to hear it or not. :) Genre's can vary... old timers, for example, use a lot of 'goldie oldies' BUT... their 'goldie oldies' will be the faster songs, songs with 'get off your a$$ and kick some a$$ type lyrics'. Guys sstRams' age will use 80's metal.... ladies in the Gym have Beyonce's fastest and rowdiest at full volume... each to their own...

I, on the other hand, am as likely to be listening to "Autumn" by Anthony Vivialdi as "Talk Dirty To Me" by Poison. Actually.. MORE likely, I think. As likely to be listening to the theme from "Forest Gump" as "Macho Man" by the Village People (ummmm, bad example perhaps :) ).

I've thought about this, why I am like this... and the answer is pretty straight forward, I'm kooki-pootz. BUT.. when I want to rationalize it I have come up with this excuse - "It's not the Tempo for me as much as it is the 'inspiration'. In other words... the theme to Forest Gump 'picks me up and gives me purpose in life', (read: I will pedal faster), as much as listening to "Panama" by Van Halen.

Summary - while the more gentle, quiet, reflective music 'mellows' most people out... with me it CAN mellow me out, but not necessarily... depends - it can also get my off my a$$ and motivate me to get busy living. Go figure. - JamesJM

Disneyland here I come... (7 replies)

It's our annual trip to Disneyland coming up this weekend. Actually... my family can take a few annual trips to Disneyland in any given year. :)

Around my home a monthly event is to play "What is your favorite ride in Disneyland"... an impossible question to answer. I think if I had to name a 'favorite' thing about Disneyland it would not be a ride so much as it would be being in an area. The walk from the Tiki Room to the Pirates of The Caribbean is my favorite place to be in Disneyland. It's almost exactly as it was the first time I went to Disneyland which was in 1955... 2 weeks after it opened. The rides are different today.. except for the Jungle Cruise which was there on opening day. Now I love every place in Disneyland... Tomorrowland, New Orleans Square, Fantasyland, Tom Sawyer Island, Frontierland... but when I'm standing in front of the Jungle Cruise Ride it's like I've 'come home'. I belong there. It's mine. :)

If I HAVE to choose a favorite ride, welllll, I guess Pirates of the Caribbean is my favorite.

So anyway.. here's a list of things that are"Today" at Disneyland and that I applaud.. and some things they screwed up.

Remodeling the Swiss Family Robinson tree house to currently be a "Tarzan" tree house was just so incredibly wrong, at a spiritual level, that I'm quite certain whoever came up with the idea will spend eternity in hell.

Adding the "Fantasmic" extravaganza was so brilliantly conceived and put together that whoever came up with the idea is without question a Saint, or if still alive on their way to being a Saint.

Pirates - not there on opening day... probably the best ride ever created 'all things considered'... that means decor, theme, thrills, etc etc etc.

The Train that goes around the perimeter of Disneyland. Most people do not ride it... GREAT for those of us who love it. You can almost always get on it... and it's sublime.

Taking out the old fashioned Rocket Ride motif for the more up to date rockets... bad move. Those old rockets WERE the very definition of Tomorrowland. They should have simply repainted them and left well enough alone.

Well, I could go on... but won't. :) I will end with this - I always hear from people who 'do not like Disneyland'... they exist. (No doubt some will reply to this thread with complaints). Some actually HATE it but I won't talk about them because to actually 'hate' Disneyland means you're so far gone as a human being that you are of no consequence or importance to life, the Universe, or anything... but to those who 'do not like' Disneyland - I feel pity for you... but also a bit of gratefulness because you are not there making the 'crowds' even more intolerable and allowing those of us who did NOT sell their soul's to the devil to get on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in a semi-reasonable amount of time. :) - JamesJM

Weird Things That Happened To You (1 reply)

I'm sure everybody has experienced a weird happening during the course of their lives: Let's hear about them...

Here are 2 that I'll never forget.....

At a Bar-B-Que at a friend's house, circa mid-1980s. There were probably 10 couples there. The beer, wine, hard liqour and yuks were in ample abundance, along with an occasional mary-jane stogie being passed around. (I didn't inhale) The event was two-fold: a nice bar-b-que meal and later a Mike Tyson fight. (All of the guys, and 3/4s of the girls loved boxing.)

After the meal, everybody was helping clean-up and put food away... I was sitting at the kitchen table in a too-much-liqour, secondary-smoke, semi-fog, watching two women washing dishes. I turned away for second - then heard a scream at the sink. The owners cat had fallen out of the tile ceiling from at least 10 feet and landed directly in the sink :lol

Second good one: At a card-playing party with my girlfriend and I as well as couple who were goods friends. We were at their house. I excused myself to go use the bathroom. I raised the toilet lid and a huge brown snake reared its head out of the water. I hollered and everybody came running to see what was wrong. The snake swam back down the hole before they arrived, and no one believed me. They said I had too much to drink... :cry

How bout model rocket fans?? (no replies)

I had never launched one till just 3 years ago. My Dad bought my boys a starter kit for Christmas. We learned two quick lessons after the very first launch...A. Make sure it doesn't come with an engine that will launch it TWO THOUSAND FEET and ....B.) Cut a larger hole in the parachute. Why???
When I hit the launch button and as the rocket took off, QUICKLY, my boys and I reacted with a "WHOOOOAH!!" About 2 seconds later, we looked at each other, as to say..."OK.....Where the heck did it go???" It had gone up to close to 2,000 ft. It took a while before we could spot the chute. When we did, I saw that it was drifting very fast in the upper winds. I bet it landed almost 2 miles from the park. LOL We never saw it again.

BUT...With the right engines and a better hole in the chute to make it fall WHERE WE ARE, we have had some good fun with those things.

First Car - What was yours? (61 replies)

First, I remember getting my learner's permit (you could drive as long as a regular licensed driver was with you).

My earliest memory was my dad letting me drive our 1968 Chevy Caprice home from church. My mother, riding in the back seat, was a nervous wreck and she carped at me and made me a nervous wreck, too. :teeth BTW: I still remember when my dad bought that car brand new, off the lot at Merollis Chevrolet. Sticker price was $4,300. He haggled the salesman down to $3,500.

My first car was a hand-me-down 1961 Chevy Impala, which my dad also bought new. It was white with a blue inset down the sides. It had a 283 v8 engine and ran great. But a car was never born with fewer options: no power steering, no power brakes or windows, no AC. It didn't even have a radio. (There was a metal plate over the hole where a radio would have been.)

Back then, paint quality was horrible. And this car's rear quarter panels were rusted out so bad, you could nearly remove a suitcase without raising the trunk lid.

Of course, the first thing I did was save up for some used chrome reverse wheels and an 8-track stereo that fit in a bracket under the dash. (You know, the kind where you could push in a button on the side and slide the whole thing out and take it in the house at night.) I made $1.62 an hour, flipping hamburgers in a fog of grease at Mickey-D's.

Some of the 8-track tapes I remember blasting: The Guess Who's Greatest Hits, The Grass Roots 16 Greatest Hits. Three Dog Night (yes, "Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog" was on it - the #1 song of the year btw..., Bread, Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, Aretha Frankin and on and on....

I took a young, foxy fraulein that I worked with at McDonald Hamburgers to see Bread at the Kiel Opera House. As far as my heart-strings were concerned, she was equivalent to Susan Somers in American Graffiti, but Clea was even prettier. It took me quite a while to build up the nerve to ask her to go, but by God, I did it :thumb
I think I wore a hunter-green leisure suit and a liberal application of Brut 33. And I got a kiss from the princess after I said goodbye at her front door. I floated back to the car. :spintounge (I probably played Bread's "I wanna make it with you" or "Baby I'm A Want You" on the ride home.) :thumbsup

Anyone have a clue how Google+ works? (1 reply)

I don't. I have had a Google+ account for some time now but I have no idea how to use it or even why I have it. I don't think Google should try anymore with the 'social media' thing because it's a concept they just can't seem to get. It's the 'simple' part that's throwing them for a loop.

And while I'm on the topic... who do you think pries into your personal affairs the most of any 'tech' company. I'd vote for Google.. simply because they're the biggest and baddest BUT... Facebook has to be close. Ever go to the 'privacy settings' on Facebook? You'll sooner memorize and understand the entire I.R.S. Code than figure out Facebook Privacy settings. You don't think they simply don't WANT you to know how to shut them out of your personal life now do ya? :)

Ever do an experiment to see if 'reputable' businesses on the Internet obey their 'privacy statements'? hehehe, let me save you some time... None of them do, not one of them. Not the first go-round anyway... they will wait until you prove beyond any shadow of a doubt that you have both the resources and the grit to take them to the US Supreme Court. It's easy to test them... you all have 'alias' emails, right? Set one up if not.. go to any 'reputable' company of your choosing and sign up opting OUT of all notices, contacts, ads, everything. Then give it.... Oh.... a month... and watch the 'targeted ads' start rolling in to your alias email. :)

Some I have caught in the act:

Amazon
Bank Of America
REI
Barnes & Noble
Dell Computers
EBay
Target
Sears

And many, many more. I was kind of 'proud' of my favorite store - Cabela's, because they didn't give out my alias email... HOWEVER... Cabela's sends out so many on their own BS it's really no different than if they gave your email to the world. :) - JamesJM

The more we jumped, the bolder we got....and reckless. About 4-5 of us were jumping between two ramps about 6-8 feet apart. Well, the guy infront of my messed up the landing ramp, making it barely teeter on the log we had it on. I bounced on the ramp and long, flew over the handle bars and landed square on my chin....6 stitches later!!! LOL
